The first Championship rounds since covid.. and the future looks bright!

British Autograss Series – Stroud

The 26th and 27th of July saw the first British Autograss Series round held by the Wiltshire League and the first UK championship round held at Scunthorpe. After a very tiring weekend for us with Aby’s class 8, she made it to the final after a run off and finished 5th, this was only her second BAS final in the class, but onwards and upwards with new beginnings revealed soon and hopefully more big finals to be made!

All throughout 2020 and 2021 we have seen the potential our juniors have got, but this weekend they shone like never before, and gave us some of our best results of the weekend. In just her 3rd season in the class, and second new car in a year, Tia Rees stormed through the heats with a 1st, 3rd and 1st and made it to her first ever final a very respectable second qualifier, after a re-run, Tia finished 3rd, leaving her with excellent points to start the championship off currently being the top girl and lying 2nd overall. The driver says the car handles like a dream, and that’s all we can ask for as constructors! Adam Robinson had a brilliant run this weekend, also very early on in his career, taking 2 2nds and a 3rd in the heats, and collecting good points in the final. Also fairly new to his car, Adam truly has potential just from looking at the amount of wins he had in the 2020 season.

Among ladies class 8, Laura Makar was flying through the heats, and made it into the top 5 qualifying for the final, unfortunately, Laura took a tumble in the first run of the final, leaving her unable to compete in the re-run. Thankfully, Laura was ok and was already in the garage the Monday building her car back up awaiting the next time she can get out. Sue and Liam Nicholls are still getting used to their new car, but from the side-lines, it looks like they’ve had the car for years! Liam started the weekend with a 2nd, unfortunately Sue had some damage in her first heat, but after a few hours in the workshop Saturday night, the car was repaired and the pair could get back out to what they do best on the Sunday.

UK Autograss Championship- Scunthorpe

That same weekend, at another end of the country, more of Team BB gathered to battle it out amongst others for a good start in the points ahead of the next 4 rounds. Cat Mumford started it all off for Team BB. Racing with the men is always competitive wherever you go in the country, however the former national champion and champ of champs in the ladies started flying the flag for BB taking a win in the first heat, followed by 7th and a 2nd qualifying Cat for the first final of the year. Cat is currently lying 5th overall in men’s class 8, but always looking to improve and jump up the places throughout the championship.

Chris Ashwin took a roll earlier on in the year, but he got back out a few weeks after and went to the UK round with a positive mindset and it paid off. After problems with the car in the first heat and finishing 7th, Chris and his class 10 got back up the chart and had a 3rd and a win in his further heats. After constant conversations back and forth from BAS to UK, Chris used his head in line with his right foot and finished a brilliant 3rd in the final, which makes all the hard work worth it and leaves him 4th overall.

Now last but certainly not least, the youngest member of our team Cory Mumford. Cory started racing throughout the delayed season of 2020, so this was Cory’s first ever championship round as a competitor. After watching his dad, nan, and auntie compete all through his life, he is no stranger to watching racing and watching success come through his family. But now it was Cory’s turn to fly the flag for the Mumford name. Throughout the heats, on what was a difficult but very smooth track, Cory finished 2nd, 2nd and 1st, which secured Cory the top qualifier spot joint with another driver. This was amazing in itself, but Cory didn’t stop there, he went on to win the final at just 11 in his first ever full season, and won best turned out special. His family were so proud of him as you can imagine, we imagined a few tears from mum and nan when this moment came and from the other championship, his racing family were absolutely thrilled for him.

So overall, a brilliant weekend had from our little team. Keep checking back for more results.
